Poetry Helps Youth at a Juvenile Detention Center Find Peace

Earlier this year, a PBS Newshour report covered poet Reginald Dwayne Betts’s guest appearance and the Free Write Jail Arts and Literacy program at Chicago’s Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. Betts, who was incarcerated as a teenager, says this about his visiting the detention center’s juvenile offenders:

“If I get them to think about their own stories, they get to write their stories down and think in a different way about how their stories shape the life that they have. And if you want a different life, you find a way to tell different stories.”
