YALLFest Comes to Incarcerated Teens

For the first time since the Charleston Young Adult Book Festival (YALLFest) was launched in 2011, the celebration was extended to incarcerated teens. Key authors kindly hosted a joint event for the Books Unbound (B.U.) book club members on Friday, November 11. Additionally, all 12 inmates that attended their author talk and book signing received generous donations from the authors, including: a journal, comic books, and a full set of each author’s bestselling series of young adult novels. (That’s a lot of books!)

For one B.U. member, who discovered his love for reading while imprisoned, this YALLFest event brought his enthusiasm for literature full circle. One of the authors that visited on November 11 wrote a book that he first read and became a fan of while incarcerated. Needless to say, he is extremely excited about reading the rest of the books in the series!

While having books is a simple pleasure that free people take for granted, this incredible event would not have been possible without the combined efforts of supporters and the Charleston County Public Library, who have provided an amazing foundation of hope, encouragement, and, of course, crowdsourced donations and books for the incarcerated teens that participate in Books Unbound. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event possible and to everyone who advocates for literacy for all!
